POUGHKEEPSIE – A 22-year-old Poughkeepsie resident has been charged with felony grand larceny after an incident on North Clinton Street in the City of Poughkeepsie.

On November 26, city police responded to pre-dawn reports of a man in the parking lot of the apartment complex crashing into vehicles and hitting at least two of the buildings.  After speaking with witnesses at the scene, they determined that Alvarez Maximilliano had stolen a van belonging to one of the residents and attempted to leave the area.  He crashed into at least four other vehicles and struck two separate apartment buildings.

The stolen van sustained substantial damage during the attempted getaway.

The vehicle owner told Mid-Hudson News that other tenants saw the thief trying to get out of the vehicle, but he was unable to unlock the automatic door locks.  The owner also said that his vehicle sustained substantial damage to the front-end, the entire driver-side, and the passenger-side rear.  The airbags were also deployed during the collisions. When police arrived, they found the 22-year-old near the van and took him into custody.

Police are considering additional charges against the alleged car thief.  Anyone with information regarding this incident is asked to call the TIPS line at 845-451-7577.
