Monticello man arrested for stealing two vehicles

MONTICELLO – A 25-year-old Monticello man was arrested by village police on Monday in connection with a series of thefts on November 11.

Trevor Tompkins was charged with felonies of burglary and two counts of grand larceny as well as misdemeanors of petit larceny, criminal possession of stolen property, criminal mischief and obstructing governmental administration.

Tompkins was arrested following an investigation into a burglary that occurred at 4 a.m. on Thursday, November 11 at the Safelite Auto store at 51 Forestburgh Road in Monticello.

Tompkins broke into the store through a bay window and then stole a 2021 Ford van belonging into the store. He then drove the stolen vehicle to Elk Drive in the village where he abandoned the van and stole a 2004 Mitsubishi Outlander motor vehicle that was left running by its owner to warm up.

Tompkins drove the second stolen vehicle to Dunbar Road where he later abandoned it in a damaged condition.

Monticello Village Police were able to identify Tompkins through surveillance video.

In accordance with state bail reform, he was released on an appearance ticket pending further court action.
