POUGHKEEPSIE – The teenager accused of the stabbing death of 16-year-old Quraan Smith at an Arlington High School football game on September 17, was arraigned in Dutchess County Court on November 19. Nestor Ortiz-Campo, an 18-year-old resident of Poughkeepsie was indicted on Second Degree Murder, Manslaughter, and Criminal Possession of a weapon on November 5 by a Dutchess County Grand Jury.
Dutchess County Senior Assistant District Attorney Frank Petramale said that after the arraignment before Dutchess County Court Judge Jessica Segal, he was remanded to the Dutchess County Jail in lieu of $500,000 bail, $1 million secured bond, and $2.5 million partially secured bond.
The DA’s office says that Nestor-Ortiz intentionally stabbed Smith in the chest with a knife. The incident created a riot-like situation that required several police departments to respond and disperse the crowd. LaGrange firefighters/paramedics worked diligently to save Smith who eventually died from the wound. Petramale says the stabbing was intentional. Nestor-Ortiz was arrested at the scene by the Dutchess County Sheriff’s Office.
The prosecutor noted that if convicted, Ortiz-Ocampo faces a maximum sentence of 25 years to life in prison for the Murder count, and a maximum sentence of 25 years in prison and up to 5 years post-release supervision for the Manslaughter count, and a maximum sentence of 1 year in jail for the weapon count.
