MOUNT VERNON – A Mount Vernon Police Detective Sergeant was injured while arresting an armed man.  The suspect is being held in Westchester County Jail on felony charges.

Police say that on Monday, November 15, four detectives from the Violent Crimes Unit observed four subjects arguing near South 8th Avenue and West 2nd Street.  As the officers approached, one of the subjects pulled a gun from his pocket.  The police identified themselves and ordered the man to drop the weapon.  The man failed to comply and fled on foot as the officers radioed for assistance.

A uniformed sergeant spotted the suspect on East 3rd Street and transmitted his location.  Moments later, a detective sergeant arrived and tackled the suspect to the ground, sustaining injuries to his ribs and shoulder in the process.  The suspect, identified as 23-year-old Omowale James, was handcuffed and searched.  The search resulted in the discovery of a loaded semi-automatic handgun with a high-capacity magazine in the suspect’s pocket.

The injured officer was treated at a local hospital and is expected to return to duty after recovery.

James is being held on $40,000 bail for the felony charges.
