Sarah Salem, Chairperson of the Common Council

POUGHKEEPSIE – Common Council Chairperson Sarah Salem, arrested for a DWI accident that injured a city resident in February of 2020 is due back in Poughkeepsie City Court on Wednesday, November 17.  Salem has requested a jury trial and those types of proceedings have not resumed since the pandemic began.

City of Poughkeepsie police arrested Salem after they responded to a two-car accident on the night of February 26, 2020, involving the city lawmaker.  During their investigation, officers determined that Salem had been operating her car while under the influence of alcohol.  Further investigation indicated that Salem ran a red light and struck another vehicle.  The operator of the second vehicle has undergone lengthy medical treatment since the accident.

The arrest of Salem has upset many city residents, some of whom have protested in front of her place of employment and residence.  The protesters are seeking Salem’s resignation.  That is unlikely considering the council chair was just re-elected earlier this month.

City resident Jamar Cummings is one of the most vocal critics.  He participated in several protests using chants of “Hey, hey, ho, ho, Sarah Salem’s got to go,” while calling for Salem’s resignation.  “If she would just resign, I wouldn’t have to do this,” he said, while telling people to “hold your politicians to a higher standard – don’t let them get away with their criminal behavior.”
