POUGHKEEPSIE – A 19-year-old Connecticut man was shot in the hand early Monday evening.  The victim’s car has been impounded as part of the investigation.

On November 15, 2021, at 5:40 p.m., City 911 received a call reporting shots fired in the area of 106 Smith Street, with a vehicle fleeing the scene. A short time later, a call to City 911 reported a vehicle into a tree on Dubois Avenue.

Responding officers found the man in the car suffering from a gunshot to his hand and with head injuries from the crash. The car was on fire and the Poughkeepsie Fire Department was summoned to extinguish the flames that were burning the vehicle that was registered in Connecticut.

This victim was transported to MidHudson Regional Hospital for treatment; his car was impounded for further investigation. At the scene, the man indicated to officers that the shooting occurred near Lent Street.

Poughkeepsie Police Detective Lieutenant Matt Clark said the man “refused to cooperate with our investigation and made no statements regarding what happened inside the car prior to the accident.”

Two brothers who had been in the vehicle, one 19 years old, and his 17-year-old sibling, were found walking in the area of the accident with visible minor injuries to their hands and were brought to police headquarters.

Statements from a witness and statements from one of the subjects gave conflicting accounts of what happened inside the car.

No weapon was recovered and the impounded vehicle will be processed for any evidence that could help to determine what happened inside the vehicle, Clark noted.

The siblings were not charged with any crime and were released from custody. The investigation is ongoing. City police are asking that anyone with information regarding this or any other gun-related incident call the confidential TIPS line at 845-451-7577.
