POUGHKEEPSIE – Poughkeepsie High School Principal Kelleyann Royce-Giron has been absent from her duties since the middle of last week, according to a few members of the school staff.  Sources have told Mid-Hudson News that Royce-Giron is on “administrative leave” and Assistant Principal Wendy Wright has been tasked with principal duties in the building.

The same sources say that Royce-Giron has been at odds with the Poughkeepsie City School District administration over several issues in the building since becoming principal in February of 2020.  “Kelleyann has repeatedly told the administration that there is a shortage of staff, a shortage of security, and the building is in need of work,” said one staff member, speaking anonymously.  “The superintendent and the school board have not helped make the necessary changes.”

School District Superintendent Dr. Eric Rosser was asked about the absence of Principal Royce and said, “No member of the Poughkeepsie City School District is permitted to comment publicly about individual personnel matters.”  Royce-Giron did not respond to repeated requests from Mid-Hudson News seeking comment.

The high school has gone through numerous principals in the past few years and has been plagued by violence that has overshadowed the accomplishments of many of the students.

Royce-Giron is a 1990 graduate of Poughkeepsie High School and had a 20-year career in the New York City education system, most recently as the principal of New Venture STEAM Academy, prior to being named to head Poughkeepsie High School.
