The new Dutchess County Jail is expected to be finished in 2024.

POUGHKEEPSIE – Dutchess County Comptroller Robin Lois has issued a comprehensive financial accounting of the Dutchess County Jail project as of June 30, 2021.

This report covers all phases of this project, summarizing the total costs of the project through June 30, 2021, and provides a detailed review of the procurement process for the construction of the new Jail.

The report serves as a follow-up to Comptroller Lois’ previous reports on the Jail project, in May 2018 and May 2020. These reports are part of her commitment to increase transparency in Dutchess County Government and ensure accountability to the taxpayers.

“As this capital project is the largest ever undertaken by Dutchess County Government it is rightly a project of great concern to the taxpayers, particularly during these uncertain times. I feel it is important to keep everyone informed as to the spending, vendor contracts, and construction timeline throughout the project,” said Lois. “I hope that taxpayers will find this report helpful in visualizing the project and understanding where their tax dollars are being spent.”

As of June 30, 2021, $159.4 million has been spent or encumbered on all phases of the project with a remaining $32.8 million approved and available to spend of the full $192.2 million appropriated.

The Justice and Transition Center’s (Jail) design has been downsized from its original 569-bed design to 328 beds in 2020.  Funds approved and available in 2016 for this phase of the construction project is $154.8 million, while the current estimated cost to complete the revised jail plan is $131.4 million; a projected cost savings of approximately $22.8 million. The current timeline for construction completion of the jail is May 2024.
