POUGHKEEPSIE – Children young and old in the City of Poughkeepsie were given a Halloween treat on Sunday.  The “YOU Goes Boo” event at Eastman Park was in contrast with the violence that has gripped the city from Thursday to Saturday.

Seven people were shot in Poughkeepsie over the weekend.

The 55 Montgomery Coalition with financial support from Councilman Evan Menist held the Halloween celebration featuring music, pumpkin painting, performances, costume contests, and other family-friendly events.  The coalition is a group of local organizations working to draw the vision for the long-anticipated Youth Opportunity Union (The YOU) at the site of the former YMCA.

Mayor Rob Rolison joined with councilmembers Yvonne Flowers and Evan Menist to watch as costume-wearing kids, and some adults painted pumpkins with the assistance of Marist students who volunteered their time to make the event a success.  “The turnout is great and we couldn’t have asked for better weather,” said Menist who represents the Eastman Park area.

Councilmember Flowers brought her grandkids to the event.  The costumed kids were playing games and participating in the sack race while Flowers looked on.  “The city needs events like this now more than ever,” Flowers said.
