ALBANY – State Environmental Conservation Commissioner Basil Seggos Wednesday denied the Title V air permit for the proposed new Danskammer electric generating plant in the Town of Newburgh.

Governor Kathy Hochul applauded the decision to deny the permit for Danskammer as well as the Astoria Gas Turbine Power plant.

“Climate change is the greatest challenge of our time, and we owe it to future generations to meet our nation-leading climate and emissions reduction goals,” she said.

Seggos said both plants “are not justified or needed for grid reliability.” He said the state “must now shift to a renewable future.”

New York Public Interest Research Group Regional Coordinator Eric Wood said if approved, “Danskammer would have continued to pollute the Hudson Valley for decades to come.”

He said New York “needs to do everything we can to avoid climate catastrophe and we’re glad to see Governor Hochul and DEC stepping up to the challenge.”

The Beacon City Council had previously gone on record opposing Danskammer. Now Mayor Lee Kyriacou said the DEC “has wisely recognized that Danskammer’s proposed new fossil fuel power plant was unnecessary and inconsistent with the climate goals of New York State.”

Manna Jo Greene, environmental action director for Hudson River Sloop Clearwater, said Danskammer would be “an excellent alternative proposal… to become a battery storage facility to ensure the reliability of solar and other renewables generated in the surrounding region.”

A representative of the new Danskammer company cold not be reached for comment.
