SOUTH NYACK – The State Parole Board has granted Brinks’ armored car robber David Gilbert who took part with his fellow members of the radical Weather Underground back on October 20, 1981.

That attack in Rockland County resulted in three deaths – Nyack Police Sgt. Edward O’Grady, Police Officer Waverly Brown, and Brinks’ guard Peter Paige.

Gilbert was sentenced to 75 years-to-life in prison for his active role in the robbery.

His parole is “disgraceful,” said South Nyack Police Chief Daniel Wilson, president of the Police Chief’s Association of Rockland County.

Gilbert was sentenced to 75 years-to-life in prison for his role in the robbery.

His parole is “disgraceful,” said South Nyack Police Chief Daniel Wilson, president of the Police Chief’s Association of Rockland County.

The chief called the robbery “organized and calculated” and noted the perpetrators used automatic weapons and wore body armor. “The intention was violence from the onset by firing automatic weapons and shotguns upon the Brinks’ guards without warning.

Gilbert’s parole “is an insult to surviving family members, law enforcement, the people of Rockland County, and the people of the State of New York,” Wilson said.

State Assemblyman Mike Lawler (R, Pearl River) called the parole board’s decision “an absolute abomination and an unforgettable slap in the face to law enforcement and the families of Edward O’Grady, Waverly Brown. And Peter Paige.”

Lawler called on the parole board to resign immediately “in disgrace.”
