NANUET – Dozens of O&R overhead line technicians continued today to rebuild the section of the electric system that was badly damaged in an overnight double traffic accident that closed part of Rt. 59 in Nanuet all day today.

Six poles, three transformers, several hundred feet of wire were knocked to the ground, and power to 440 O&R customers was knocked out when a car crashed into a utility pole just after midnight this morning on westbound Route 59 in Nanuet,

A short time later, a second vehicle plowed through the accident scene, causing further damage to more poles and wire.

By 3 p.m. today, much of the wreckage had been cleared and five of the six downed poles had been replaced. Next, wire would be ready to be strung and transformers ready to be hung.

Power was starting to return to the 14 remaining customers still out of service. O&R crews had re-routed power around the accident site to restore electric service to 425 customers.

The rest who are able to get their electric service restored are expected to get back late tonight or early Tuesday morning. And, some customers need repairs made to their damaged private electric equipment before electric service can be safely restored.
