POUGHKEEPSIE – The fake arrest warrant scam that resurfaced in Dutchess County last week had taken on a new twist as the perpetrators have now “spoofed” the Dutchess County Sheriff’s Office main phone number – 845-486-3800 to make it appear as though the calls are coming from the sheriff’s office.

The perps have disguised themselves as “Sgt. Earl Cottman” and are calling people, telling them that they have fake warrants for their arrest.

On October 14, the sheriff’s office received two reports that the suspects had claimed to be an official from the Dutchess County Jail and that to avoid arrest, they should pay a sum of money.

The sheriff’s office said no legitimate law enforcement agency would attempt to satisfy a warrant or make promises to avoid prosecution by soliciting money.

Anyone who receives a phone call or email to send money, do not follow the instructions or call the number in the email.

Officials said if there is any doubt about a phone call or email you have received, contact the sheriff’s office before sending any money.
