WASHINGTON – A bill to dedicate the Fulton Street Post Office in Middletown in honor of the late Congressman Ben Gilman passed in the House of Representatives and was headed to the Senate for approval before going to President Biden’s desk.

Gilman “was a true statesman and a tireless representative for the people of the Hudson Valley,” said Congressman Sean Patrick Maloney (D, NY-18), who sponsored the legislation.

The late lawmaker “elevated constituent service to an art form, always a call away,” said Maloney. While Gilman was well-known through his district, “he was also known on the world stage and deeply respected by our nation’s leaders.”

Gilman’s widow, Georgia, said he “never forgot that he was sent to Washington because of his people at home. His work left an indelible mark on our community, and it give me peace to know his legacy will live on forever in Middletown and New York.”

Gilman died in December 2016 after representing the Middletown area in Congress for 30 years including time serving as chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee.
