HUDSON – The Rip Van Winkle Bridge connecting Hudson and Catskill across the Hudson River is the next in line for cashless tolling. It will take effect at midnight on Monday, November 1.
Cashless tolling is already in use on the New York State Bridge Authority’s Newburgh-Beacon and Bear Mountain bridges.
The new system is expected to be implemented on the Kingston-Rhinecliff and Mid-Hudson bridges in the months ahead with the process completed by March 2022.
With cashless tolling, motorists will experience non-stop travel under gantries with sensors and cameras that read E-ZPass tags and take license plate images.
Vehicles with E-ZPass tags will be automatically charged and those without E-ZPass tags will have their license plate image captured and a toll bill mailed to the registered owner of the vehicle via Tolls by Mail NY.
The toll booths, installed in 2003, will be demolished shortly after the new system kicks in.
