FISHKILL – An inmate at Fishkill Correctional Facility refused to comply with officers’ comments when he appeared to be intoxicated and wound up injuring seven members with issues ranging from a broken nose to various joint pain and swelling.

The first two officers to confront the inmate, who is serving nine years for assault and criminal mischief in New York City, were women. As the inmate broke free from the officers’ attempts to subdue him, he yelled, “Get up bitches! Let me finish you off!”

It took a total of eight officers to subdue the 33-year-old prisoner during the October 11 incident.

When interviewed later as to what caused the outburst, he said he “was having a bad day.”

The incident falls just a couple of weeks after two significant violent outbursts by inmates at Greene Correctional Facility that injured eight officers.

“This vicious, unprovoked attack by inmates against staff continues on its record pace this year and shows no signs of slowing down, especially with the looming implementation of HALT,” said officers’ union Mid-Hudson Vice President Chris Moreau. “Over the last decade, despite the incarcerated population dropping by nearly half, assaults on our officers have increased by 100 percent thanks to the continued erosion of the discipline system by the state legislature.”

Moreau called on lawmakers to “step up and enact policies based on reality, instead of following the latest trend or media narrative.”

The Fishkill incident was made public by the New York State Corrections Officers and Police Benevolent Association.
