Ulster man indicted for killing best friend

KINGSTON – A Town of Ulster man has been indicted by an Ulster County grand jury on charges of murder and criminal possession of a weapon following a fatal shooting incident on September 29.

At the arraignment of Gregory Thayer, 48, of Magic Drive on Friday, the district attorney’s office disclosed that the victim, Bruce Swiere, and Thayer were childhood friends.

Swiere, 48, who lived in California, was spending time at the Thayer home when he was shot once in the head as he sat at the dining room table. Afterwards, Thayer called a family member; he did not call or report to 911 or police.

The victim was in town to console his mother who had lost her partner. He had planned to spend a few days more to see relatives and Thayer before returning to California.

Thayer was remanded to the Ulster County Jail pending a future court appearance.

If convicted of the murder charge, Thayer will face up to 25 years to life in prison; The weapons charge carries up to 15 years in prison.
