CORNWALL – State Police investigated a helicopter crash on Storm King Mountain in the Town of Cornwall that occurred at approximately 2:30 p.m. on Sunday.  Initial reports indicate that a woman was killed in the crash.

Gavin Amacher of Wappinger and his girlfriend were hiking to the top of the mountain when they heard the crash.

“We heard it fly overhead and then ‘boom,’ explosions and I heard it went down in the gully up there, hit some trees, exploded. It was loud,” he said. When they came down the mountain, they talked to other hikers who said it was a helicopter crash.

911 dispatchers received several calls from hikers on Breakneck Ridge reporting the crash.  Route 6 and 202 were closed in the vicinity of the Bear Mountain Bridge as a result of the accident that occurred near Route 218.

Police radio transmissions indicate that the 2007 Robinson R44 helicopter is registered to SMT OPS Inc. in Setauket, NY.
