RED HOOK – A 21-year-old Village of Red Hook resident is being treated at MidHudson Regional Hospital in Poughkeepsie after being tased by a Red Hook police officer Thursday night.
The event began at 10:10 p.m. when the officer was dispatched to a village residence for a report of a man with self-inflicted knife wounds to the neck and wrists. When the officer arrived, the subject opened the door at which time the officer noticed he was covered in blood and was wielding a knife.
The officer gave a verbal command to drop the knife and attempted to deescalate the situation. The man refused and indicated that he wanted to die and wanted the police to kill him.
The officer again ordered the man to drop the weapon. Rather than comply, he began to approach the officer, putting the cop at risk.
The officer deployed his taser, striking the man in the chest. The action halted the man and the knife was dropped. The officer then began rendering first aid until treatment was taken over by Northern Dutchess Paramedics personnel.
The man was then transported to the hospital for wound treatment and a psychological evaluation.
