MONTICELLO – Assemblywoman Aileen Gunther (D, Forestburgh) is calling on Governor Kathy Hochul to sign into law legislation that would forgive a $1.9 million penalty imposed on the Monticello Central School District.
The legislature approved the bill during this year’s session.
The bill had been vetoed by former Governor Andrew Cuomo for the past two years, but Gunther is hopeful it will be signed this year under the new administration.
“Governor Hochul has said it’s her goal to get our kids back in the classroom,” Gunther said. “If we’re penalizing a district nearly $2 million for an administrative error, that’s money that could be used to keep students safe and healthy.”
The assemblywoman said $1.9 million “is a lot of money for a small community like ours. Our property tax base cannot and should not have to take on this additional burden.”
