PLEASANT VALLEY – A 45-year-old Poughkeepsie man was killed when his car ran off Route 44 in the Town of Pleasant Valley and slammed into a utility pole.

The Dutchess County Sheriff’s Office identified the victim as Michael Santiago, who was alone in a 2017 Toyota minivan.

Captain John Watterson said Santiago was driving eastbound on Route 44 near Rossway Road at around 3:15 p.m. on Saturday, September 25, when his vehicle ran off the road, struck two signs, a mailbox and the utility pole.

He was transported to MidHudson Regional Hospital where he died.

The sheriff’s office was assisted at the scene the Pleasant Valley Fire Department.

At this time the primary factors in the crash appear to be erratic driving and unsafe speed, said Watterson.

The investigation is continuing by the sheriff’s office Detective Bureau and Crash Investigation Unit.
