TOWN OF FISHKILL – Town police in Fishkill have arrested a Newburgh man suspected of being involved in an August 3 hit-and-run accident that seriously injured a 74-year-old man.  Fishkill Police Lieutenant Paul Schettino said the arrest was the result of a coordinated investigation between the patrol and detective divisions.

On August 3 police responded to a report of a man lying on the side of the road in the area of Route 82 and Lafayette Place.  The man had sustained serious injuries and was transported to a local hospital for treatment.  Town of Fishkill patrol officers determined that the man had been walking east on Route 82 at about 5 a.m. and was struck by an eastbound vehicle that fled the scene.

Lieutenant Schettino said that the patrol officers located parts of the vehicle that helped identify the vehicle involved in the accident.  “The patrol officers on the scene played a critical role in solving this case.  Their thorough investigation discovered evidence that led to the eventual arrest of 39-year-old Carmelo Reyes-Flores.”

According to Schettino, the evidence from the scene was turned over to the detective division.  After a month-long investigation Reyes-Flores, who resides at 9 Arlington Place in Newburgh was interviewed and subsequently arrested on September 8.  He is facing the felony charge of leaving the scene of a personal injury auto accident, misdemeanors of circumventing an ignition interlock device and aggravated unlicensed operation, and several vehicle and traffic violations.

“Our officers and detectives, who are all part-time employees, worked diligently to gather evidence and make an arrest in this case.  It was a great example of how our divisions work well together,” said Schettino.

Reyes-Flores was released on an appearance ticket returnable in the Town of Fishkill Court.
