Stolen car crashes into Poughkeepsie City Police car

POUGHKEEPSIE – At least two City of Poughkeepsie police officers are being treated for injuries at a local hospital after attempting to stop a stolen vehicle on Thursday.  The incident occurred around 2 p.m. on Gifford Avenue.

Police officials say that City 911 received a call of a car going the wrong way on Gifford Avenue.  One person attempted to block the driver from proceeding any further.  The wrong way driver struck that vehicle and attempted to go around it.  Police were given the license plate which came back to a vehicle stolen from Fishkill.

As police arrived and attempted to stop the subject, the driver struck at least two police vehicles, one of which was struck head-on, bringing the pursuit to an end.

The subject was taken into custody and transported to police headquarters.  The injured officers were transported to MidHudson Regional Hospital by another police unit.

First Ward Councilman Chris Petsas was at the scene and commended the police work.  “This is just one more example of our police officers putting their lives on the line to protect the public.  They are a tremendous asset to the city.”
