WASHINGTON – Governor Kathy Hochul has requested a federal emergency declaration for 14 counties following the widespread damage caused by the remnants of Hurricane Ida.

Among those counties are Dutchess, Orange, Putnam, Rockland, Sullivan, Ulster and Westchester.

That request has the support of U.S. Senators Chuck Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand, who are urging FEMA to approve the declaration.

If a disaster declaration is declared, grant assistant would be made available to state and local governments, as well as certain non-profit organizations, to reimburse costs incurred for emergency work and the repair or replacement of damaged facilities.

The funding is available on a cost-sharing basis; FEMA generally covers 75 percent of the eligible costs for permanent and emergency work.
