Man charged with breaking into bedroom, stripping

POUGHKEEPSIE – Poughkeepsie Police have arrested a city resident for sex crimes after a Saturday morning burglary call. The incident on Rose Street occurred at approximately 12:10 a.m.

According to police, officers responded to a Rose Street address for a report of a burglary in progress. The suspect, later identified as James Thrasher, 29, of Poughkeepsie, had gained entry into a private Rose Street residence. Once inside he entered a bedroom occupied by a woman and girl.  He then allegedly stripped off his clothing and approached them. The victims were able to alert other family members who were in the residence and were able to escape the bedroom.

When police arrived, Thrasher was found locked in the bedroom and refused to come out. Officers subsequently forced the door open and were able to take him into custody without further incident.

Crime scene technicians and detectives responded to the scene to collect evidence and conduct interviews.

Based on this investigation, Thrasher was charged with the felonies of attempted rape, criminal mischief, and burglary as well as the misdemeanors of endangering the welfare of a child and public lewdness.

He was arraigned in City of Poughkeepsie Court and remanded to Dutchess County Jail on $150,000 bail or $300,000 bond.
