Detectives on the scene of the latest Poughkeepsie shooting at 8 North Clinton

POUGHKEEPSIE – City Police in Poughkeepsie are investigating a shooting that occurred Friday evening just before 7 p.m.  City 911 received several calls reporting gunfire in the vicinity of the intersection of Cottage and North Clinton Streets.

Police responded and found a 17-year-old male victim on the sidewalk in front of 78 North Clinton Street.  As police secured the scene, the victim was treated by Poughkeepsie firefighters and Mobile Life medics.  Once stabilized, the patient was transported to a local hospital for treatment.

Uniformed officers, detectives, and crime scene technicians remained on the scene to secure evidence and interview witnesses.  Former County Legislator and neighborhood resident Mario Johnson heard the gunfire from his house a block away.  “I knew it wasn’t fireworks. I heard four or five shots and called 911to report it before I ran up to the scene,” said Johnson.  “As I got closer, I could hear people screaming for help.”

An unidentified witness told Mid-Hudson News that she was in her car traveling north on Clinton and saw a gray sedan speeding away at the same time she saw the young man fall down the front steps of 78 North Clinton.  The woman was unsure of how many shots she heard.  She called 911 to report it and remained on the scene to speak with the police.  At least one shell casing was found at the intersection of the two streets.

Anyone with information regarding the incident is asked to call the police at 845-451-7577.
