POUGHKEEPSIE – Newly appointed 8th Ward Councilwoman Sakima McClinton is continuing her community outreach efforts by holding an informal “block party” event on Saturday, August 14, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.  The free event is being held at the intersection of Hooker Avenue and Whittier Boulevard.

McClinton is using the event to hear the concerns of neighborhood residents.  “Interacting with the residents of the 8th Ward is vital to being an informed lawmaker,” McClinton said.  The Poughkeepsie-born graduate of the United States Military Academy is also seeking donations of new school supplies for distribution to students in the next few weeks.

McClinton is asking for people that can do so, to drop off items such as pens, pencils, notebooks, and other school-related items.  The Councilwoman will be organizing the distribution of the items during community events being held in the next few weeks.

The block party will also have free music, food, and games along with vendors selling their wares.  Fellow Councilwoman Yvonne Flowers is hosting a block party on Lent Street later in the day on Saturday, in a coordinated schedule with McClinton.  Both representatives are seeking community input on the recent rise in violent crimes in advance of Council Chairperson Sarah Salem’s crime forum being held at the end of the month.

” I look forward to continuing to represent the 8th ward and working towards a safer city for all residents. The purpose of this event is to hear the needs of my ward, collect school supplies for those in need,  while also providing safe summer fun for all residents,” said McClinton.
