NYACK – Republican Assemblyman Mike Lawler (R-Pearl River) introduced legislation to remove former Governor Mario M. Cuomo’s name from the bridge formerly known as the Tappan Zee Bridge.  The representative of the 97th Assembly District is working with Republican State Senator Mike Martucci (R-Wawayanda) of the 42nd Senate District to pass legislation in their respective chambers.

Lawler’s bill in the Assembly has eight co-sponsors, including two Democrats.  In a Tweet publicizing the bill hr introduced in March, Lawler tied the resignation of Governor Andrew Cuomo to the call for the change, saying it is time to  “remove the disgraced Cuomo family name” from the span connecting Rockland and Westchester counties.

Republican Assemblyman Karl Brabenec from Orange County is a co-sponsor.  NYC Democratic Assemblymembers Kenny Burgos from the Bronx and Jessica Gonzalez-Rojas from Queens are the first in Cuomo’s party to support the removal of the Cuomo name from the Hudson River bridge.

Lawler’s proposed legislation was introduced in March of this year and has renewed interest after Cuomo’s resignation announcement.  The Assembly bill can be found here.
