Hudson Valley unemployment declines dramatically

ALBANY – Unemployment in the Hudson Valley in June of last year was at 12.3 percent, according to the state labor department. This past June, it was down to 5.3 percent, another indication of the opening economy.

The lowest rate of joblessness this past June was in the Village of Port Chester, at 3.6 percent. The highest rate was in the Town of Monroe, at 8.0 percent.

The cities in the area were all above the regional average. Mount Vernon  had a 7.7 percent rate of unemployment, Newburgh was at 7.0 percent, Yonkers was at 6.9 percent, Poughkeepsie was at 6.8 percent, and Middletown was at 6.3 percent.
