POUGHKEEPSIE – A report of a fire at the time Poughkeepsie firefighters change shifts Wednesday morning did not interfere with their ability to prevent a house from burning down.  The firefighters were dispatched to 31 Thornwood Drive at 6:50 a.m. to a reported fire.  Seven minutes later, the first-arriving firefighters found smoke coming from the building and went to work.

According to Poughkeepsie Fire Chief Mark Johnson, the men found an active fire in the lower level of a single-family dwelling and worked quickly to extinguish the blaze.  Johnson noted that the residents had evacuated, without injury, prior to the arrival of the fire apparatus.

The fire department’s investigation reports that the fire appears to have started in the storage area of the lower level and spread to the first floor and attic area of the structure.  The house sustained heavy fire and smoke damage on the lower level and suffered smoke and water damage throughout the house.

Johnson said that the Arlington Fire Department and Mobile Life Support Services were at the scene.  All involved firefighters were back in service at 8:56 a.m.
