MONTICELLO – The phones at the Sullivan County 911 rang off the wall on Monday morning as residents reported smelling and seeing smoke blanketing the area.

It wasn’t a summer haze, but rather smoke from the Canadian forest fires, said county spokesman Dan Hust. “It was a fairly thick smoke condition,” he said. By late afternoon, it was dissipating.

The weather pattern was such that it brought the smoke at ground level over the Catskills. “You could actually smell it,” Hust said.

The jet stream was expected to funnel it out of the area later in the day.
