TOWN OF POUGHKEEPSIE – A 15-year-old Counselor-In-Training (CIT) at the Town of Poughkeepsie’s Greenvale Park summer camp program died suddenly at the park on Thursday afternoon.

Town Supervisor Jay Baisley credited camp staffers, town police, Arlington firefighters, and Mobile Life medics with their  efforts to revive the youth at the New Hackensack Road summer camp.

Baisley said the young man appears to have gone into cardiac arrest and senior camp staffers worked to revive the boy while other counselors relocated camp attendees to another area of the park.

A 911 call brought a Town of Poughkeepsie officer, Arlington firefighters, and an ambulance from Mobile Life to the scene.  All of the trained personnel tried unsuccessfully to revive the child who also has siblings that work as counselors.

“This is one of the worst things I have ever experienced in my life,” said Baisley as he mourned the loss and expressed condolences to the family.  “Our staffers, first responders, and the Dutchess County Trauma Team did a phenomenal job in counseling the campers and fellow staffers.  For obvious reasons, the Greenvale camp will be closed on Friday.”

Baisley noted that employees will be given the opportunity to speak with grief counselors at town hall on Friday.  “I can’t say how impressed I am with the way the crisis team responded almost immediately and worked to ensure that campers and staffers were dealing with the grief.”
