WASSAIC – A man and woman stranded in the middle of the Ten Mile River in Wassaic late Sunday afternoon were rescued after they were clinging to a log.

Flooded areas from recent storms made the rescue a challenge for the several agencies involved.

Once river access was gained, swift-water rescue technicians were able to set up a highline system, deploy rescue boats and rescue the pair from the fast-moving river.

Both were transported by ambulance to Vassar Brothers Medical Center in Poughkeepsie.

Investigation revealed that a 27-year-old man from Dix Hills and a 25-year-old woman from Melville were tubing down the river and encountered problems. The woman started to struggle in the water, but the man was able to assist her.

As a result, the man injured his shoulder. Both victims were able to get onto a downed tree that was in the river until they could be saved.

Neither was wearing a lifejacket.

The Dutchess County Sheriff’s Office reminds everyone to avoid rivers, streams, and creeks after rainstorms and always wear lifejackets.
