NEWBURGH – A new judge has been named to the Newburgh City Court by Mayor Torrance Harvey on Monday, July 12. The vacancy, according to Harvey was created when one of the three judges, Peter Kuklin, retired.
Anika Mohammed, an attorney with a private practice in Highland Mills was sworn in at city hall on Monday. Ms. Mohammed served as an Assistant District Attorney for Orange County from 2015 to 2019, where she prosecuted both felony and misdemeanor cases. She left the DA’s office in 2019 to start her own
private practice.
“It was a very difficult decision,” said Harvey, adding “Through the voices of our city council and city Democratic committee, my decision has been made.” Harvey called the appointment “historical”, noting that it was “One of the most difficult decisions I’ve had to make,” without elaborating.
Mohammed received her paralegal certificate from Marist College in 2009, her Baccalaureate degree from Marist in 2010before attending Pace Law School. The new judge graduated with her law degree in May of 2014 and was admitted to the NYS Bar in September of 2015.
Ms. Mohammed also serves as the Mock Trial Coach for Mount Vernon High School.
