TOWN OF ULSTER – Behind them Friday were piles demolished buildings mixed with asbestos at the former Tech City complex, so Senator Charles Schumer used this backdrop to push for more EPA Superfund monies.

“It’s time we clean up the asbestos on this Tech City site. Experts have determined that no level of asbestos fibers is safe,” said Schumer. “It’s time we get to work and address and remediate asbestos contamination in this community.”

Schumer, who was flanked by state and county elected officials, including Sen. Michelle Hinchey and Ulster County Executive Pat Ryan, announced he was seeking about $5 billion in the pending federal infrastructure legislation for additional Superfund help.

“I am going push for billions of dollars in additional federal investment for Superfund response and removal program,” he said.

The $12 million cleanup would be administered by the EPA, which would collect those costs from the former owner. As the county seeks this help, it’s also planning more economic development on the site.
