Rockland man arrested in connection with Evergreen fatal fire

NEW CITY – One of the two people still wanted in connection with the fatal fire at the Evergreen Assisted Living Home fire in Spring Valley on March 23 has turned himself in to Rockland County District Attorney investigators.

Manuel Lema, 47, of Rockland County, was charged with criminal impersonation and obstructing governmental administration. He was released on an appearance ticket returnable to Spring Valley Village Court.

He was associated with the nursing home. The former manager, Denise Kerr, is still wanted.

Father and son Aaron and Nathaniel Sommer were both arrested and charged with actions that caused the fire. They were remanded on bail.

Wayne Ballard and Raymond Canario, building inspectors for the village, were also arrested and charged with falsely filing reports to the state regarding fire inspections. They were both released on appearance tickets.

Two people died in that fire, a volunteer fireman and a resident.
