TOWN OF POUGHKEEPSIE –  Dr. Peter Grant Jordan has been named the new president of Dutchess Community College (DCC) by the State University of New York (SUNY) Board of Trustees.  Jordan succeeds Dr. Pamela Edington, the engaging college leader who retired in July of 2020.  The new president will take office on August 2 of this year.

The college’s Acting President, Ellen Gambino, guided the school through several months of the pandemic and one of her final acts was a grandiose ribbon-cutting ceremony unveiling the new DCC Aviation Center at Hudson Valley Regional Airport, formerly known as the Dutchess County Airport.

SUNY Chancellor Jim Malatras was at the ribbon-cutting on Thursday and reiterated his statement from Wednesday’s appointment.  “Dr. Jordan joins SUNY’s Dutchess Community College at an exciting time as the campus prepares to welcome thousands of students to its two locations and provide them a high-quality education from many newly renovated, state-of-the-art facilities.”

Malatras said Jordan’s life work “has centered on community colleges, ensuring students from diverse backgrounds and experiences have access to a good education, while both keeping in mind potential barriers to their success and helping them overcome those barriers. We look forward to the work together ahead. And, our thanks to Acting President Ellen Gambino for her leadership during this past very untraditional year.”

The chairman of the College Board of Trustees, Michael Dupree, said “Jordan’s appointment” is the culmination of a comprehensive national search process to recruit.”

The chairman called Dr. Jordan, “A leader who will listen to all our key campus constituencies and build a vision of what that will look like. Then, to also create it.”

Jordan currently serves as president of Tarrant County College-South Campus in Texas. He has a passion for the mission of community colleges, as well as being committed to access, diversity, academic quality, planning, innovation and student success, according to a statement issued by DCC.

Prior to joining Tarrant, Jordan held positions of vice president for institutional effectiveness and vice president of enrollment management and student development at LaGuardia Community College.

During his career, he has served in a range of capacities, including interim vice chancellor for student affairs at CUNY; vice president of enrollment and student affairs at Vaughn College (College of Aeronautics); dean of student enrollment, New York Institute of Technology; dean of university admissions, Polytechnic Institute of New York University; assistant and associate dean of university admissions at Adelphi University; associate director and acting director of admissions at Eugene Lang College/New School for Social Research; and assistant and associate director of admissions at Adelphi University.

Jordan holds an Ed.D. in Higher Education Management from the University of Pennsylvania; a M.S. in Operations Management from Tandon School of Engineering/New York University (formerly Polytechnic University), and a B.A. in English and History from Colby College.
