GARDINER – In the wake of a fatal car-motorcycle crash at the intersection of Route 44/55 and Bruysnswick Road in Gardiner on Tuesday, Ulster County Executive Patrick Ryan has demanded that the regional office of the State Department of Transportation do something to improve safety there.

“Town Supervisor Marybeth Majestic, our local first-responders, and my office all agree that making this intersection safer should be a priority for NYS DOT,” Ryan said in a Facebook post. “Enough is enough. We will again request that the DOT act immediately quickly to remedy this situation.”

Killed in this latest accident was George Airday, 75, of Gardiner. He was operating a motorcycle that collided with a car at that intersection.

After the impact, the passenger car struck a utility pole.

Airday was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver and passenger of the car were transported to Montefiore St. Luke’s Cornwall Hospital in Newburgh.

The Ulster County Sheriff’s Office said at this time there appears to be no criminality involved with the accident and speed is not a factor.

The investigation is continuing.

The sheriff’s office was assisted by the State Police and Town of Gardiner Fire Department. Airday was a member of the Gardiner Fire Department.
