WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Chuck Schumer joined with Democratic elected officials and Community Voices Heard, along with 1,000 plus spectators, to rally for Senate Bill S1-For the People Act Wednesday evening.

The For the People Act addresses the voting restrictions imposed by conservative led states regarding early voting, automatic voter registration and voting rights for the formerly incarcerated.

Those in favor of the legislation are concerned that these voting restrictions are a targeted agenda against inhibiting the rights of communities of color and disenfranchised communities. The legislation would allow for all states to have such protections: at least two weeks of early voting, automatic voting registration and voting for formerly incarcerated individuals, as well as a nationwide small donor, public program for federal elections that will match publicly raised funds up $200.

Schumer said this is an obvious partisan attack and one that is racially motivated.

“They say there is voter fraud,” said Schumer. “They don’t go after voter fraud in any Republican areas. They only go after voter fraud, quote-on-quote, when they go after black people, young people, brown people, people-of-color, people in urban areas. Passing voting rights is one of the most important things we can do this year. It’s one of the two most important things. We’re going to fight until we win,” he said.

Schumer added the importance of the legislation is why it is denoted as “S1,” signifying its importance within the hierarchy of bills before the Senate.

The U.S. Senate will vote on the For the People Act next week and there is only a window until the end of July to pass it before states initiate their districting processes.
