TOWN OF WALLKILL – The State Attorney General’s Office and State Police will be conducting the investigation into the fatal shooting of a man by a Wallkill Town Police officer on Saturday afternoon.
The incident occurred around 3:30 p.m. at Schutt Road and Avenue A in the town. Chief Robert Hertman said there was “an encounter with a suspect” and the officer fired his weapon, striking the man, Christopher VanKleek, 31, “at least once.”
Officers rendered emergency first aid before he was taken to Garnet Health Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.
Hertman says the Orange County District Attorney’s Office and State Police conducted the initial investigation and under existing guidelines, the State Police and State Attorney General’s Office will be conducting the ensuing investigation.
The officer, whose name was not immediately made public, was placed on administrative leave as a matter of policy, the chief said.
