TOWN OF WALLKILL – One man is dead following his being shot by a Town of Wallkill police officer late Saturday afternoon, Police Chief Robert Hertman told Mid-Hudson News.

The incident occurred at Schutt Road and Avenue A in the town. The chief said there was “an encounter with a suspect” and the officer fired his weapon, striking the man “at least once.”

Officers rendered emergency first aid before he was taken to Garnet Health Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.

Hertman says the Orange County District Attorney’s Office and State Police conducted the initial investigation and under existing guidelines, the State Police and State Attorney General’s Office will be conducting the ensuing investigation.

The officer, whose name was not immediately made public, was placed on administrative leave as a matter of policy, the chief said.
