DEC is making changes to licenses required by sportsmen.

MONTICELLO – The Sullivan County Legislature has joined the effort to allow 12- and 13-year-olds the ability to hunt with rifles providing they have a licensed and experienced adult hunter with them.

County Legislator Alan Sorensen remembers learning how to hunt with his brothers and father as he grew up on a farm.

“We need to do more to get our youth out-of-doors and get them away from the video games and understand that hunting is, when you learn it the right way, is not going out there and blasting away at animals. It is conservation, it is understanding nature, it is understanding the relation between the animal you are hunting and the overall environment,” he said.

County Legislator Luis Alvarez noted he had his young child fire a rifle to gain respect for the damage it could do if handled inappropriately.
