NEW ROCHELLE – Fire early Saturday displaced 11 people from five apartments when fire tore through a 19-residence apartment building at 75 Centre Avenue in New Rochelle at 2:15.

Fire Chief Andy Sandor said when they arrived on the scene, several people were at windows at the front of the building and on fire escapes. Fire was coming out of windows in the back left corner apartment, down a narrow alleyway.

Firefighters rescued several people down fire escapes and also took people down in the bucket of the tower ladder truck.

All civilians were safely evacuated, although 13 were taken to area hospitals, he said.

Five of the apartments were unable to be re-occupied.

The Red Cross was also on the scene to offer assistance to residents.

Mutual aid was provided by fire departments from Yonkers, Eastchester and Greenville.
