Man dies after being struck by train while fishing

STOCKPORT – A man who was fishing off a railroad trestle was struck by an Amtrak train and later died, the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office reports.

Authorities said Bernard Barrett, 51, of Hudson was reported to be fishing off the Columbiaville Trestle at the end of Station Road in the Town of Stockport at around 2 p.m. on May 27. When he heard a train whistle, he tripped and was struck by the northbound train and thrown into the water from the collision. He was located by a person fishing nearby who called 911.

Deputies said Barrett was reported to be conscious, alert and complaining of lower back pain when located.

He was stabilized for transport by LifeNet Medivac and brought to Albany Medical Center where he later died from his injuries.

The sheriff’s office was assisted by Amtrak Police, State Police, Stockport Police, Stockport Fire Department, Greenport Rescue Squad, Hudson fire Department boat, and the Albany LifeNet Medivac.
