Unemployment drops dramatically

ALBANY – April unemployment in Hudson Valley counties was one-third of what it was in the height of the pandemic one year earlier in April 2020, the State Labor Department reports.

With more and more vaccinations and businesses reopening, more people are returning to work.

The highest rate of joblessness one year ago was in Orange County, at 16.9 percent. That county now stands at 5.3 percent.

In April 2020, Columbia County had the lowest rate, at 11.9 percent. It now stands at 4.5 percent.

One year ago, Ulster County’s rate stood at 16.7 percent; it is now 5.3 percent.

Dutchess County’s rate of joblessness 12 months ago stood at 15.4 percent. It is now 5.1 percent.
