NEWBURGH – Before Joe Donat went to work as Newburgh city manager, a job he held for 2 ½ years prior to the city council’s vote last Thursday not to renew his contract, he was Congressman Sean Patrick Maloney’s district chief of staff based in Newburgh.

Maloney told Mid-Hudson News over the weekend that Donat did good work for him, but he does not know what precipitated his demise in Newburgh.

“He did great work for me. I know all the good work he has done for Newburgh, but I don’t know the circumstances, but I plan to get up to speed on it. But, look at it, it is always the decision of the local government there and I will leave it to them who they want to manage the city,” Maloney said.

The city council named City Comptroller Todd Venning as the new city manager. He was Donat’s first new hire when he was manager.

Venning, who had a policy of not talking to the media as comptroller, did not return a call from Mid-Hudson News the day after his formal appointment as city manager.
