CARMEL – Two animal welfare groups – People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), and New York State Humane Society, have offered rewards for information leading to the arrest and conviction of whoever was responsible for the neglect and abandonment of an older, non-neutered Mastiff/American Bulldog mix dog found lying on the road near the intersection of Sodom Road and Brewster Hill Road in the Town of Southeast early Sunday, May 16.

The Putnam County SPCA Law Enforcement Division is investigating leads in the case.

PETA is offering a reward of up to $5,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction on cruelty charges for those responsible for the condition of the severely injured dog.

“This dog’s body was rotting away for lack of veterinary care,” said PETA Vice President Coleen O’Brien.

New York State Humane Society is offering a $1,000 reward in the case. “Whoever is responsible for abandoning this unfortunate animal must be brought to justice and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law,” said an agency spokesperson.

The Putnam County SPCA’s 24-hor hotline is 845-520-6915.
