POUGHKEEPSIE – A City of Poughkeepsie Police K-9 is credited with apprehending a burglar inside of a business early Sunday morning. A 20-year-old Poughkeepsie resident was caught in the EFCO Products building at 130 Smith Street at approximately 12:30 a.m.

Police responded to the business after being alerted by a burglar alarm was triggered indicating glass had been broken.  Responding officers found a window that had been forced open when they arrived.  Additional officers and a K-9 unit responded to the location and began a search of the building.  During the search, the K-9 alerted his handler to the presence of the man, now identified as Reginald Cannady, and ordered him to stop.

Cannady was taken into custody without incident.  Police spoke with an EFCO representative who indicated that Cannady was not an employee and was not authorized to be in the building.  He was charged with felony burglary and misdemeanor petit larceny and held in custody for arraignment.

A representative of the City of Poughkeepsie PBA praised the work of the K-9, saying, “Aside from detection and apprehension duties, K-9 units play a critical role in large building searches, and are a valuable tool for the department.”
