BEACON – The City of Beacon was awarded a 2020-2022 State Department of Environmental Conservation Urban and Community Forestry Grant for $36,000.

The grant awarded will be used to fund a tree maintenance project at Memorial Park. The scope of this project includes the pruning of 27 trees and the removal of 13 trees.

The proposed project seeks to implement a comprehensive tree maintenance program for a high-use public park in the city.

Building from the recommendations of the City of Beacon 2013 Tree Inventory Report, the project goal is to address the remediation of several tree conditions in Memorial Park.

The project seeks to address the maintenance needs of trees in the park that were previously and/or those recently identified as in need of high priority maintenance work including those recommended for removal.

The objective of the project is to provide arborist guided maintenance services that will maximize the life span of the park’s trees and resulting public health benefits that include improved air quality, reduction in storm water runoff, added aesthetic value, wildlife habitat, and other issues.

The city has selected Alpine Tree Care of Hopewell Junction to complete the work for the grant.

The work will be scheduled to begin later in May and early June.
