NEW ROCHELLE – Police Commissioner Joseph Schaller is retiring effective June 30 and Deputy New Rochelle Commissioner Robert Gazzola will assume the top post, City Manager Charles Strome announced on Tuesday.

Schaller has been with the police department for over four decades. He was appointed in August 1974 and rose through the ranks, becoming commissioner in 2018.

Gazzola joined the force in 1986, rising through the ranks to deputy commissioner in 2018.

“We were fortunate to have such a dedicated professional as Joe Schaller in our police department for so many years, especially in senior leadership and finally as commissioner. His experience has been valuable during good and also some very difficult times,” said Strome. “I am pleased that Rob Gazzola will follow as commissioner, bringing his expertise to the position and ensuring a seamless transition for the department.”
